What Are

Sensitive Ferns?

Here we are in a wetland. One of the main indicators of a wetland would be a sensitive fern.

Sensitive ferns are one of the first ferns that come up in spring. They're called a sensitive fern because if they get touched with any frost at all, they'll immediately die.

What's special about sensitive ferns is they're an indicator of ground water. When you see a sensitive fern (even if you don't see water), there is water in the ground.
